Who they are
”…Or Does it Explode?” is a four-piece band from Madison, Wisconsin. Show listings describe the group as formed around 2019. The official bio lists Shawn Bass and Brandon Boggess on guitars, J Granberg on bass and Erik Rasmuson on drums. Bass sings and handles sound samples, video projection and occasional synth parts. The name comes from the final line of the Langston Hughes poem “Harlem”. A name-origins page credits a chapter title in Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States” for the introduction. The Bandcamp pages carry the tags emo, midwest emo, post-hardcore and post-rock. Idioteq’s feature describes five years in the local scene, with angular riffs and introspective melodies.
Discography
Six releases sit on the band’s Bandcamp page. The Demo arrived in February 2021 with three tracks in 18:16. Chrysalis followed in June 2022, ten tracks in 58:37. The Medium is the Message came out in August 2023 with seven tracks in 38:36. Tales to Needed Outcomes landed in February 2025, twelve tracks in 49:34. The album notes describe it as a solo project by Bass during the early COVID lockdown. The full band later adopted the songs. It was recorded at Pachyderm Studios south of Minneapolis. Session players added cello, violin, flute and trumpet. Nick Tveitbakk recorded and mixed, Carl Saff mastered. Swan appeared in April 2025 with six tracks in 32:49. All six Swan titles also appear on Chrysalis. The site bio counts three full-lengths before the current record.

Realities Disguised as Symbols was released on June 18, 2026. The record holds 13 tracks in 56:45. Shelter runs longest at 6:44, Elegy shortest at 1:56. The page posts no lyrics for any of the 13 tracks. Titles include Instincts, Adderall, “Do You Feel It Too?” and “Baby’s First Rorschach Test”. The vinyl option is a limited 12 inch on random color vinyl with a two panel insert. A short run of CDs comes as a four panel wallet with two tracks not available on vinyl. The vinyl lists at 25 dollars, the CD at 10 dollars, digital from 10 dollars.
