History & Deep Dives
Where hardcore came from, how the subgenres split, and the stories behind the records you already own.
Hardcore has one of the best-documented origin stories in music and one of the worst-documented middle chapters. Everyone knows Black Flag and Minor Threat; far fewer people can explain how powerviolence split off from fastcore, why youth crew happened, what d-beat actually means, or how screamo went from San Diego basements to a worldwide DIY network. This category fixes that. Every deep dive is researched from primary sources, dates and labels double-checked, and written so a newcomer can follow it without a glossary. The past is not automatically good and we do not pretend it is. These are essays about why the music sounds the way it sounds, and why the scene kept reinventing itself for fifty years.
